Autumn Term 1 (T1) 2026
The government has revised the School Food Standards for the first time in over a decade to improve the nutritional quality of meals served in schools. The updated standards aim to:
- Increase fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, fibre, and pulses in meals
- Reduce foods high in fat, salt, and sugar
- Limit deep-fried foods and high-fat items like pizza or sausage rolls
- Encourage healthier desserts, with fruit, yoghurt, or custard offered most days
- Apply to all food served across the school day, including breakfast, lunch, snacks, and breakfast clubs.
Schools are encouraged to publish menus and food policies online to improve transparency and accountability www.gov.uk. The standards are designed to help children develop healthy eating habits, support energy and concentration during the school day, and address concerns about childhood obesity and tooth decay.
