Good morning Parents and Carers,

I hope you all have had a good week so far. It has been a very settled week for us, with the children immersing themselves in their routines.
This week, we welcomed Lucy Swift from the Child of Hope School, Uganda, to talk about what school life is like in an African country. The children had a chance to ask questions and learn more about the similarities and differences between Georgeham and Uganda. Furthermore, the children from Child of Hope have written letters, which our children will reply to.
During our collective worship assemblies, we have talked about our school rules (Safe, Kind, Respectful, Hardworking, and Good Listeners) and what we can do to look after one another. We have seen some fantastic behavior from the older children, who have included the younger children in playing games at break and lunchtime.
Finally, I wanted to remind everyone of a few key dates coming up this term:
  • Wednesday, 9th October @ 2:30 pm – Curriculum afternoon for parents and carers. This is an opportunity for you to come into school and see what your child(ren) has been learning.
  • Tuesday, 22nd and Wednesday, 23rd October @ 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm – Parent/Carer Meetings with the class teacher. More details to follow shortly about booking an appointment.

Attendance: Reception, Year 1 and Year 3 all had 100% – great start !
Ms McCormick will be starting up the running club again next week, on Wednesday mornings. Look out for an email from her with details.
Above is a link to a poster about the North Devon Cross Country league that a few children took part in last year. There are 6 events, all held on Sundays (so out of school time), and you would be responsible/liable for your own entries/attendance and safety at the events should you decide to enter. Do let us know if you have entered so we know, especially as Ms McCormick and Mr Fry will for sure attend one or two of them to cheer them on !
We will also be looking for strong runners to compete for the school in the Stephen Shields on Friday 18th October. Runners will be chosen by Ms McCormick…

Secondary school admission applications for September 2025 are now open!

(Reception applications open in November)

If your child has just started Year 6 you can apply now for their place at secondary school for September 2025.

For most schools in Devon, there is an admissions priority for children if they live in the school’s designated area. You can also explore other schools to find which is the best fit for your child’s needs and interests. Don’t forget to check with the schools you are interested in to see if they are holding open days/evenings/tours.

It’s also important to be aware of the school transport policy so that you understand who will be responsible for getting your child to and from school before applying for or accepting a place.

Once you’ve chosen a school(s), use our online application form to express your preference(s). You can name up to three different schools and these are equally ranked preferences, which means you can apply for the schools you most want without affecting your chances of a place at other schools. If you cannot apply online, please contact the Education helpline on 0345 155 1019 and ask for a paper copy of the form to be sent to you.

Applications must be made before the national closing date of Thursday 31 October 2024. If you apply after this date, the application will be considered late and may be at a disadvantage. The date that all allocations of school places are announced in England is known as ‘Offer Day’. For September 2025 secondary school starters this will be on Monday 3 March 2025.

  • Attendance… We report the attendance of individual year groups as it’s a really good way to see if school attendance is at a good percentage…  as high as possible of course! The DfE have a target of 96.5%
    Attending school regularly is vital to help children achieve and to give them the best possible start in life. It’s also the legal requirement of parents once children are of school age and enrolled in mainstream education. Ofsted has a strong view about attendance of course. Too many absences can lead into difficult discussions about how we can support children to achieve and do well – we could even be downgraded for our current Good status as a result.
    Absences will only be authorised if they meet exceptional circumstances. With only 190 statutory school days in the year, there are 175 days (weekends and school holidays) left to plan for family visits, non-urgent medical/dental appointments, holidays etc. School holidays are published well in advance and parents are expected to plan and take family holidays at this time so as not to disrupt their child’s education. We also try to arrange our Inset (training) days to provide time for travel… such as this term’s Friday October 20th.
    Holidays… are almost always not recognised as meeting ‘exceptional circumstances’ and therefore an absence would be unauthorised. This could result in a penalty notice being issued by DCC.
    Punctuality is important too, and the earlier we get our children into the right habits, the better. You may not realise that being just 5 minutes late every day equals 3 days of school lost a year. Please bring your child for 8.45am when they door is open and the classroom has a learning activity ready for them.
