Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a superb week of learning at Georgeham CofE Primary School – the children have been working hard across all subjects, especially history, where they have been learning about Martin Luther King (KS1), the Stone Age (LKS2) and World War 2 (UKS2). Yesterday, our school choir went to Southmead Primary for a rehearsal where they sung beautifully. It was reported that the children were a credit to the school and the community due to their amazing behaviour and teamwork. Well done children and thank you Mrs Parker.

(EP writes: We had a fantastic morning for our choir rehearsal at Southmead – the children were an asset to the school. A really lovely moment was when we were waiting for the coach on the steps outside Braunton Academy, Eli got his guitar out to play a quick tune. The children all huddled around him and sang along with him playing Chasing Cars. When it finished, we heard applause from one of the classrooms behind us, they had all been listening to them. It was so lovely – I didn’t get a photo to blog it so wondered if we could mention it somewhere on the newsletter? So proud of them ❤️ )
On the same morning ten children represented the school in a tag rugby contest held at Kingsacre Primary school. They played 7 matches and did tremendously well  winning 2, drawing 3 and losing 2.  Well done to all those who took part and thank you to Helen Cooper and Wayne who volunteered to help out on the day.
The following children stood out for us this week winning their Class Star of the Week…
Class 1  Molly Conle-Paelink
Class 2  Bailie Windridge
Class 3  Aiesha Ennis
Class 4  Eli King
A massive thank you to all the parents and carers who came to the behaviour session on Wednesday 24th April. It was a pleasure to share with the group how we approach behaviour at our school. The slides of the presentation can be found through the link below. The next parent/carer session will be during the wb Monday 3rd June where I will be discussing our RSE (Relationship and Sex Education) curriculum.
Finally, on Wednesday 1st May, we will be hosting a curriculum afternoon for all parents and carers at 2:30pm until 3pm. We offer you the opportunity to come into school to see what your children have been learning about. We hope to see you soon at this session!

Attendance We report the attendance of individual year groups as it’s a really good way to see if school attendance is at a good percentage…  as high as possible of course! The DfE have a target of 96.5%
Attending school regularly is vital to help children achieve and to give them the best possible start in life. It’s also the legal requirement of parents once children are of school age and enrolled in mainstream education. Ofsted has a strong view about attendance of course. Too many absences can lead into difficult discussions about how we can support children to achieve and do well – we could even be downgraded for our current Good status as a result.
Absences will only be authorised if they meet exceptional circumstances. With only 190 statutory school days in the year, there are 175 days (weekends and school holidays) left to plan for family visits, non-urgent medical/dental appointments, holidays etc. School holidays are published well in advance and parents are expected to plan and take family holidays at this time so as not to disrupt their child’s education. We also try to arrange our Inset (training) days to provide time for travel… such as this term’s Friday October 20th.
Holidays… are almost always not recognised as meeting ‘exceptional circumstances’ and therefore an absence would be unauthorised. This could result in a penalty notice being issued by DCC.
Punctuality is important too, and the earlier we get our children into the right habits, the better. You may not realise that being just 5 minutes late every day equals 3 days of school lost a year. Please bring your child for 8.45am when they door is open and the classroom has a learning activity ready for them.
