‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ (Matthew 22 v39)
Attendance so far…
School average for this week
Class 1: 85% Class 2: 86% Class 3: 96.2% Class 4: 94.6%
Everyone’s attendance went up last week, but well done to Class 1 for gettig 100%
School average for the year so far: 95.5%
Illnesses and holidays impact our attendance data and the children’s learning opportunities.
It can also be a trigger for Ofsted, as they expect attendance to be in the high 90’s.
(Please have a look at our Attendance page on our website for more information.)
Last weekend was the final cross country run in the Gliddon and Squire event. Well done to all 5 runners who took part (Myla, Bea, Indie, Elowyn and Kitty) and also a huge congratulations to BEA for gaining 6th place overall – this is an excellent achievement, well done!
A message from the girls above:
Please consider joining our little cross country running group!
We refurbished Class 1 this week and the children enjoyed their ‘new room’ for the first time yesterday. It’s lovely! Thanks to Mrs Parker, her Dad, Governor Gill Gething and husband Jon, as well as many other staff and children who helped tidy, sort and move! Here’s a few photos to whet your appetite!
Next week …
Class 3’s St. George’s Residential is on Monday and Tuesday. Overnight bags can be left on the School House garden in the morning or, if it’s drizzly, to the school hall. Here’s a link to the leaflet that we issued through the week (with the kitlist on it).
Swimming on Monday is only for year 5 and year 2.
Confirmed: industrial action will be going ahead on Wednesday and Thursday, with us only being able to offer school places to Preschool children.
I’m frustrated that the news coverage spoke about the teacher strikes being about pay. It’s more about schools not being funded sufficiently, the vast range of services we have to provide (due to a reduction of funding elsewhere) and also pay increases being funded by our existing budget and not through any extra spending or funds from the Governernment as they’d like to state.
I appreciate the hard work of our school staff and I thank them for letting us know of their intentions in advance, rather than on the morning like they’ve been advised to do.
Thursday morning’s gym club can take place, with the same arrangements for those who attended last week.
Reports… these are now being finalised and will be printed and issued next week.
Red Nose Day is on FRIDAY. Please come wearing red and bring a donation that we can send on to the charity. Non-uniform is allowed, including red noses.
If you’ve not done so already, please complete this Google Form to show that you agree with our Acceptable Use Agreements for the use of IT and technology.
Petroc College would like to share with our parents a beneficial and free programme aimed to help demystify maths which would hopefully help parents to support their children through primary school.
Two main areas of the programme are:
- Understanding the language used in Maths
- Understanding Maths through fun activities and games
The flyer / picture, gives details of how to get in touch if you’re interested.
We’re a Nut free school, so that means that most kinds of tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, pine nuts) and also peanuts shouldn’t be brought in to school. Sadly, this also means that pesto sauce shouldn’t be brought into school as it contains pine nuts. Sorry if this causes any inconvenience, but I hope you can help us as best as you can to keep our children safe.

Attending school regularly is vital to help children achieve and to give them the best possible start in life. It’s also a legal requirement of parents once children are of school age and enrolled in mainstream education. Ofsted has a strong view about attendance of course and, therefore, too many absences can lead into difficult discussions about how we can support children to achieve and do well – we could even be downgraded for our current Good status as a result.
Absences will only be authorised if they meet exceptional circumstances. With only 190 statutory school days in the year, there are 175 days (weekends and school holidays) left to plan for family visits, non-urgent medical/dental appointments, holidays etc. School holidays are published well in advance and parents are expected to plan and take family holidays at this time so as not to disrupt their child’s education. We also try to arrange our Inset (training) days to provide time for travel… such as this term’s October 21st.
Holidays… are almost always not recognised as meeting ‘exceptional circumstances’ and therefore an absence would be unauthorised. This could result in a penalty notice being issued by DCC.
Punctuality is important too, and the earlier we get our children into the right habits, the better. You may not realise that being just 5 minutes late every day equals 3 days of school lost a year. Please bring your child for 8.45am when they door is open and the classroom has a learning activity ready for them.
