We encourage a sense of joy, wonder and curiosity in the wider world.
‘Live life in all its fullness.’ (John 10:10)
Attendance so far…
School average for this week:
Class 1: 77.5% Class 2: 94.4% Class 3: 96.9% Class 4: 96.1%
School average for the week: 91.2%
We’ve blogged about illnesses this week. They really can affect attendance rates, and learning opportunities!
School average for the term so far: 96.2% Again, slightly reduced this week and below the DfE target of 97%
The only way to bring this back up towards 97% … is improved attendance.
(Please have a look at our Attendance page on our website for more information.)
Congratulations to Finley, Louis and Bodie W for being excellent players on TTRS… but also Barney for obtaining the Most Awarded Player in Times Tables Rock Stars. If you’ve not come across this excellent software yet, ask your child about their Numbots or TRS account login. link
This week…
Class 3 went to Exeter Cathedral and also the Synagogue on Tuesday this week. Thanks to Geoff Phillips for researching and leading a tour for the day and also the parents for coming along and supporting the trip. Given that Class 3 had an early start and that they travelled by train – this was a lovely and unforgettable trip for them!
The next day was our School Nativity (link). It’s been a delight to hold this once again at the church as we had to do this via video last year!
Last Sunday, the school supported St.George’s Crib Service through the village. Have a look at the gorgeous photos of the service that we posted that day, but do also stop off at the crib on the green and read some of the inspiring prayers that the children wrote – they really are delightful!
This Sunday, St.George’s Church are holding their Christingle… at 6pm. One of the children described this as that service where we get an orange and Jelly Tots on sticks – yes that’s the one. Come and find out more on Sunday!
There was also a Swim Marathon last Sunday where Elowyn, Evie, Indie, Bodie and Myla swam lengths and lengths and lengths of Ilfracombe Pool and supported the schools in the Braunton Learning Cooperative Trust to raise over £400 for Trussell Trust and the Food Bank. Thanks to the parents for supporting this and the children for doing such a good job!
We also wore our Christmas Jumpers yesterday … for a bit of fun and to support SAVE THE CHILDREN. We raised almost £100, but do please click here to donate any more if you’d like.
This week coming…
Tuesday – Class 3 have their WW2 Workshop. Info about this has already come out, but use the weekend to plan your attire!
Wednesday – Christmas lunch day. Roast Turkey and all the trimmings or Veggie Roast. It’s the best!
Thursday @ 1.30pm (to 3pm) – Christmas Fair / Coffee afternoon – do come along to buy things and play games on the children’s stalls, or simply drink tea and eat cake in Class 4 with our FROGS.

Attendance… We frequently report the attendance of individual year groups as it’s a really good way to see if school attendance is at a good percentage… with it as high as possible of course! The DfE have a target of 96.5% but sadly, we finished the year, last July, being slightly below this.
Attending school regularly is vital to help children achieve and to give them the best possible start in life. It’s also a legal requirement of parents once children are of school age and enrolled in mainstream education. Ofsted has a strong view about attendance of course and, therefore, too many absences can lead into difficult discussions about how we can support children to achieve and do well – we could even be downgraded for our current Good status as a result.
Absences will only be authorised if they meet exceptional circumstances. With only 190 statutory school days in the year, there are 175 days (weekends and school holidays) left to plan for family visits, non-urgent medical/dental appointments, holidays etc. School holidays are published well in advance and parents are expected to plan and take family holidays at this time so as not to disrupt their child’s education. We also try to arrange our Inset (training) days to provide time for travel… such as this term’s October 21st.
Holidays… are almost always not recognised as meeting ‘exceptional circumstances’ and therefore an absence would be unauthorised. This could result in a penalty notice being issued by DCC.
Punctuality is important too, and the earlier we get our children into the right habits, the better. You may not realise that being just 5 minutes late every day equals 3 days of school lost a year. Please bring your child for 8.45am when they door is open and the classroom has a learning activity ready for them.
