Our school’s Eco Council has been a subsection of our School Council for years now. We’ve made important decisions about many things in the past and we’ve been hugely successful recently in becoming the first school awarded as a Plastic-Free School by the SAS.
With our work in this area expanding, we split the groups up last year and have them meeting separately with Mr Thomas now. The Eco Council’s first job was in July when they met and discussed things with the Blue Peter team. This term, some of the children went to Croyde and did some work with the Plastic Free North Devon team, seeing how much plastic air mattress and inflatables were thrown away at the seven local campsites over the summer.
Today, we had a meeting where we discussed what to do next.
Here are our minutes…
Eco Council & Climate Committee
Date: 1st November 2019
Sunday – Kitty – Jasper – Jet – Indie
1.At our next meeting we’ll be planning our assembly to tell the school what we’ve done and what we hope to do in the future. …However, we’ll be meeting often and telling you what we’ve done in our ‘minutes’.
2.Georgeham and Croyde Parish Council have declared a Climate Emergency. They have a meeting planned for the 19th November in the evening so that all the community can think about what to do to improve the climate. Please tell us what more you think we should do at school. …At our next meeting, we’ll look at what the Devon Climate Committee do and signing their declaration.
3.We have been shortlisted for the first ever SAS (Surfers Against Sewage) Plastic Free Awards, and there are only 3 schools going to the award ceremony. A couple of our Governors put forward our school because of the work that we (and Keri and Mr Thomas) have done. …We’ll find out if we’ve won in three weeks’ time.
4.Lastly, we really need to remind the school children that some families are more plastic free than others. We’d love it if everyone here helped, and in any way they can.
