Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE)

At Georgeham CofE Primary School, personal, social, health, and economic education (PSHE) enables our children to become healthy, independent, resilient, responsible, and confident members of society. Our PSHE curriculum builds upon the skills acquired during the Early Years Foundation Stage, offering both explicit and implicit learning opportunities that reflect pupils’ increasing independence and social awareness. We aim to help children understand their rights and responsibilities, appreciate diversity, and respect others as equals, preparing them to contribute actively to the wider community.

Teachers use and adapt 1Decision planning and resources to ensure comprehensive coverage of the curriculum, addressing needs accordingly. Our PSHE curriculum includes flexibility for teachers to respond to issues arising in their classes. Key vocabulary is regularly revisited to ensure children use terms like ‘mental health’ and ‘bully’ correctly. Special days and events, such as anti-bullying week and Mental Health Days, are integral to our program, along with initiatives like our Mental Health Ambassador team and our KS2 Play Leader group.

Through our PSHE and RSE curriculum, children develop positive body awareness, an understanding of how to stay safe and healthy, and the ability to form and maintain positive relationships. They leave Georgeham CofE Primary School equipped with the skills needed to navigate their future confidently, demonstrating respect, tolerance, and understanding in a diverse and ever-changing world.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

The Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum is designed to help children and young people develop the knowledge, skills, and values they need to have safe, fulfilling, and healthy relationships. Here's a brief overview of what parents and carers need to know:

What is RSE?

RSE covers a range of topics, including:

  • Relationships: Understanding different types of relationships, including friendships, family relationships, and romantic relationships.
  • Sexuality: Learning about sexual health, consent, and respecting others.
  • Safety: Online safety, understanding and preventing abuse, and knowing how to seek help.

The curriculum is designed to be age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate, ensuring that children learn about these topics in a way that is suitable for their age and maturity.

Parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from Relationships Education, which includes topics like family, friendships, and safety. However, they can withdraw their child from the sex education component of RSE, except for what is covered in the National Curriculum for Science. This component is taught when the children are in Year 6 and parents/carers will be informed when it is being taught. Parents/Carers can choose whether to withdraw their child from the conception aspect of the curriculum through Arbor permissions or written confirmation to the Headteacher (Mr Fry).
